Why is Everything so Serious? – 10 Fun Things Worth Sharing

Newsletter #006

This blog was adapted from my monthly newsletter, which you can subscribe to here.

Family movie night has been all bangers lately: Cool Runnings, Rookie of the Year, The Pacifier (feat. Vincent Diesel). All these movies are 20 years old – do they still make movies that are just…. fun?

Here’s 10 things worth sharing, just for fun:

  1. Hot Take: Bring back mainstream, big budget rom-coms. I’m talking How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Proposal, or There’s Something About Mary. Where did they go? Everything is either a 14th Avengers sequel or way too serious to watch on a Wednesday. I want to see Ryan Gosling and Lindsay Lohan as surly ex-lovers searching for lost treasure from the 1700’s (that’s actually Fool’s Gold, lol). One person doing rom-coms right: Emily Henry.

  2. Happy 5th anniversary to one of the greatest albums of this generation: Folklore by Taylor Swift. (not sarcastic 👀)
    -

  3. “Can you teach me your favorite dance move?” This is what the internet was made for – just some humans having fun on the street.
    -

  4. “We made this thing! (laptop) – we primates crawling around in the jungle… how did we do it?!” Francis Ford Coppola marvels at the beauty of human creativity.

  5. A friend asked me to share my “amazing margarita recipe” because she lost it after several years. I didn’t even know people thought about my margarita – but I’ll be honest, it’s the best margarita I’ve ever had. So here is a blog of my favorite cocktail recipes.

  6. “What does building community actually look like for you?” Kate recently joined the Scratch That podcast to talk about making space for community and opening the bookstore while parenting young kids.
    -

  7. I’ve been cooking on merch lately: Hawaiian hats, tie dye shirts, fridge magnets, world cup mascots, bookstore stickers, bandanas, and more. On that note, it’s always a great time to buy a Hot Dog! snapback
    -

  8. Check out these side-by-side portraits, each 100 years apart. “Ludvik is a former postal carrier and says he will never forget the route he worked every day.”
    -

  9. Major League Baseball is awful at marketing itself. But, damn, do I love when they mic up my favorite players during the all-star game: “I’m gonna try and throw some cheese real quick. Hold on.”
    -

  10. KC’s Liz Cook is my favorite food writer. No, I don’t read any other food prose – and why would I with journalism like this: “I have tasted the nectar of America’s premier confectioner, Shaquille O’Neal, and I have been forever changed.”

Thanks for reading. I never thought I’d be writing a monthly newsletter and I definitely never thought anyone would read it. We’re six issues deep, I think I’ll keep ‘em going.

Take it easy on those margaritas. I’m serious.
